Poker is one of the most well known and popular card games. Although there are many variations of poker, each variation basically boils down to a specific game, the basic rules remain the same. Poker is also a family of casino games where players wager on what hand lies with most of the similar rules as these rankings where arranged in rows. The different names given to poker include Omaha, Texas Holdem, Five Card Stud, Seven Card Stud, Caribbean Stud, and Texas Hold’em just to name a few.
When you make the first bet in a poker game, you are said to be betting true. This means that your bet is for the best possible hand. The next player in line would be betting in the opposite way, known as a raise. This is done when the last person betting goes all in or has reached his or her win limit, at this point all bets are for the true low card.
The next group that makes a pot will be called bluffs. These are the ones who usually call and raise before anyone has any chance to make a good hand. It is considered unacceptable to call with the expectation to raise when you have a strong hand. Bluffing is also considered when you bet the same amount as the others with the hope to get an extra card or to double up your bets, but not both in the same hand.
A pot of poker consists of two parts: the blinds and the pots. The blinds are the small chips you are dealt that go toward the total pot. There are eight blinds in a poker game, three for each player. The small blinds are worth only one point per hand, while the big blind is worth three points per hand. The pots are where you will put your money to play with.
Before the start of each poker hand the players will choose one card from the top of the deck, called the starting hand, to be kept by each player face down. This card is called the “blind”. Then the players will place their bets, called “tells”, on this card. Blinds are kept in reserve to complete the deal. When the last card is dealt and the blinds are known, each player will then announce the number of cards that are in the hand, called the “pot”.
One “draw poker” variation is “trick” poker. In this game, there is no blinds; the players are dealt five cards face-up. The player who has the best hand at the end wins. Sometimes the dealer may have a hidden card or two, called “chips”, among his cards. These “chips” can change hands during the course of the game. In a regular draw poker game, all of the cards are revealed to all players.
